Vestibular system

Define the overall structure and function of the vestibular system in maintaining equilibrium and posture.

Explain how the structure and mechanics of the otolith organ permit the nervous system to detect gravity and your relative position with respect to gravity.

Describe the vestibular ganglion (Scarpa's ganglion) and the distribution of the peripheral and central process from the perikarya in this ganglion.

Describe the sensory components of the semicircular canals and the related utricle and saccule.

Discuss how the semicircular canals work as functional pairs to detect angular acceleration and its direction.

Identify the location of the vestibular nuclei in the brainstem and diagram the connections of the vestibular nuclei with the spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, thalamus, and cerebral cortex.
