  • Insula
  • Extreme capsule
  • Claustrum
  • External capsule

  • Thalamus
  • Hypothalamus

"S2, 3, 4, keep the penis off the floor."

• Penis innervated by spinal segments S2, S3, and S4

"C3, 4, 5, keep the diaphragm alive."

• Diaphragm innervated by phrenic nerve, itself from spinal segments C3, C4, and C5 (C4 being most important)

Structure/function relationships

"SLIM"

• Superior colliculus → Lateral geniculate nucleus
• Inferior colliculus → Medial geniculate nucleus

"MALE"

• Medial geniculate nucleus = Auditory
• Lateral geniculate nucleus = Eye (visual)

"MGN/LGN:"

• Medial geniculate nucleus = Music (auditory)
• Lateral geniculate nucleus = Look (visual)
